How to Apply for an Education Loan Without Collateral in India
To apply for an education loan, register on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal, fill the common application form, upload your documents, and send the application to up to three banks. Students admitted on merit to listed institutions can get collateral free loans, and some may get an interest subsidy. The bank decides on the loan. Read all limits on the official pages.
1. Know the two parts: the loan and the interest subsidy
PM-Vidyalaxmi is a central scheme approved by the Union Cabinet on 6 November 2024. Under it, students who secure merit based admission to designated institutions can get education loans without collateral or a third party guarantor. The Government also gives banks a credit guarantee for education loans without collateral, and the scheme offers interest subvention (a government subsidy on the interest) to eligible families based on income.
The loan and the subsidy have separate conditions. We do not quote any limits here because they change. Read the current loan limit, income condition and number of places on the scheme pages linked below.
2. Check that your course and institution are covered
The PIB backgrounder on the scheme (29 July 2026) says institutions are chosen using the NIRF rankings and the list is updated. It also says admissions under management quota or NRI quota do not get this benefit. The portal home page has a link to the list of PM-Vidyalaxmi institutes. Before you accept a seat, ask the admission office whether the institution and course are on that list.
3. Apply on the portal, step by step
The portal describes three simple steps: register, fill the single common form, and submit the application to a bank. Its FAQ, which we read on 18 October 2026, adds:
- Sign up with a mobile number and email ID, then log in.
- Fill the education loan application form and upload the documents.
- Choose the bank. You can have one active application at a time and apply to a maximum of three banks.
- Review everything and submit.
- Track the status on the "Track Loan Application" tab.
Aadhaar is mandatory for the benefits of the scheme, including the loan, interest subvention and credit guarantee cover.
4. Documents the portal asks for
The official FAQ lists these uploads:
- Class X marksheet
- Class XII marksheet, or the marksheet of the last qualifying exam or diploma
- Proof of admission to the course
- Schedule of expenses for the course, as given by the institution
- Proof of income issued by a public authority or the college authority
- Photograph of the applicant and of a parent
- Photograph of a co-obligant or guarantor, only if collateral security is given
Files go up as PDF or JPEG. The portal states a small size limit, so check it before you scan.
5. What the bank does
The FAQ says the bank verifies the documents and does its due diligence before sanction. After sanction, the amount goes directly to the institution's account. The portal does not release funds; it is only a processing channel. You do not need an account in the bank before you apply, but banks ask for a savings account after sanction. If an application is rejected, contact that bank for clarification.
6. Interest subsidy: two schemes
- PM-Vidyalaxmi interest subvention covers all courses at designated institutions, for families within an income limit, during the moratorium. The moratorium is the course period plus one year.
- Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) is for technical and professional courses at approved NAAC accredited institutions or NBA accredited courses, with a lower family income limit. It covers the full interest during the moratorium and is now run through the same portal.
A student who gets another government scholarship, another interest subvention scheme or fee reimbursement is not eligible for these two. After the loan is sanctioned and disbursed, the bank notifies you to claim the subsidy, and the portal asks you to opt for it. The subsidy is credited to the scheme's CBDC wallet (the government's digital currency wallet on the PM-Vidyalaxmi app), from where it is moved to your loan account. The portal shows the claim window for each year, so read it there.
