How College Admission Works After 12th in India
How admission works after Class 12 in India: entrance exams, counselling, documents and a simple family timeline, from official NTA, JoSAA and MCC pages.
How College Admission Works After 12th in India
After Class 12, most admissions follow four steps: pick a course, take the entrance exam that course uses (such as CUET UG, JEE Main or NEET UG), join the counselling or application process of the university or counselling body, and then verify your documents at the allotted institution. Read each year's information bulletin for dates and rules.
1. Start with the course, then find its exam
The exam depends on the course, so choose the course first.
- CUET UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Its scores are used for undergraduate admission in central universities and in participating state, deemed and private universities. The official list of participating universities is on the CUET website. The 2026 bulletin says to choose subjects based on the eligibility rules of the programme you want.
- JEE Main has two papers. Paper 1 is for undergraduate engineering at NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded technical institutions and institutions funded or recognised by participating state governments. It is also the eligibility test for JEE Advanced, used for IITs. Paper 2 is for B.Arch and B.Planning.
- NEET UG is the common entrance test for undergraduate medical education. The NTA page says it also applies to BAMS, BUMS and BSMS under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020, and to BHMS under the National Commission for Homeopathy Act, 2020.
Many other courses and colleges follow their own routes. The JEE Main bulletin for 2026 says institutes may have their own eligibility rules, seat allocation rules and admission process. The CUET bulletin asks candidates to read the prospectus on each university's website before applying.
2. Apply for the exam online
The CUET bulletin for 2026 says applications are online only, on the NTA website, and asks candidates to read the bulletin carefully to check eligibility. It also says that appearing in the exam does not by itself entitle you to admission, because every programme has its own eligibility conditions. In 2026, students who had passed Class 12 or were appearing in it could take the test.
3. Understand who does what
NTA conducts the exam, publishes answer keys and results, and hosts the score card. The CUET bulletin says a merit list is prepared by the participating universities. The JEE Main bulletin says NTA is responsible only for the exam and not for admission, so admission questions go to the university or counselling body.
4. Counselling and seat allocation
- Engineering: JoSAA, set up by the Ministry of Education, runs joint seat allocation on one platform. The JoSAA page lists the participating institutes, which include the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government funded technical institutes. The JEE Main bulletin says seats are offered based on your choices and All India Rank, and that a state may prepare its own rank list for state university colleges.
- Medicine: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), under the Directorate General of Health Services, conducts online counselling for 15 percent all India quota seats in undergraduate courses and for seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, BHU and AMU, among others. Its page also lists coordination with agencies for state and UT quota seats.
- Central and other universities: each university announces its own steps after CUET scores come out. Follow its website.
5. Documents to keep ready
For seat allocation, the JEE Main bulletin says documents are checked for identification, date of birth, qualifying examination, state of eligibility, category and disability, where applicable. Category candidates must show original certificates in the prescribed format. Keep originals and copies in one folder.
6. A simple timeline for a family
- Class 11 and 12: shortlist courses and read last year's bulletins to see the pattern.
- When NTA opens applications: fill the form online, then download the admit card.
- Exam, then provisional answer key and challenge window, then result and score card.
- Counselling or university application: register, fill your choices, check the allotment.
- Document verification, fee payment and reporting at the allotted institution.
Dates and fees change every year, so read the latest bulletin on each exam website.
